The story of Thomas De Gendt, a Belgian runner much loved for his fighting spirit and his desire to tackle races in front of the group, on the run, alone.
An authentic cycling story.

"Alone. It is therefore better to reach the finish line alone. Because if I get to the end with someone else, the doubt always remains.
What if the other attacks the red triangle? What if it's faster?
It's a tactical phase of the race that isn't for me. No, it's better to run alone.
Attack from the group of fugitives. Pull a little harder than the others in the lead group. Make him understand who is the best. Little by little they get tired.
And when I see that they are destroyed by fatigue: increase the pace even more. To accelerate. And hope to be the only survivor.
Alone. From that moment on it's just a fight against myself."
Thomas De Gendt

Twelve long years of career among professionals and not many victories in the palmarès. But those few conquered in great style and as the culmination of mostly solitary escapes. Because Thomas De Gendt likes to stay out of the group: in the real sense (he hates pedaling crowded among other riders) and in the figurative sense (he can't bear to be confused in the homogenizing logic of contemporary cycling), aware of not being a champion but also , in this last decade, of having interpreted the runner's profession in a completely original way.

Without mincing words, in this book-interview Thomas De Gendt talks about himself as a man and as a cyclist, between family memories and narration of the great circus of professional cycling from his privileged position as an insider.
