14 febbraio 2004. Una telefonata dal Residence Le Rose di Rimini avvisa che c’è un corpo a terra in
un appartamento. È quello di Marco Pantani, il ciclista italiano più popolare e discusso, capace di
entusiasmare l’opinione pubblica come mai nessuno dai tempi di Coppi e Bartali. Quando vinceva il
Giro d’Italia e soprattutto il Tour de France, il nostro Paese si fermava: come per Alberto Tomba
nello sci o Valentino Rossi nel motociclismo, si abbassavano le serrande, si correva a casa da scuola
in tutta fretta, si accendeva la tv. C’era un eroe da vedere. A vent’anni esatti dalla sua morte,
questo libro rende omaggio al suo mito nel modo più genuino e insieme originale: in sella a una
bicicletta. Non una biografia come se ne sono lette tante, non l’ennesima indagine-scoop sulla sua
fine tragica, tantomeno un racconto delle sue imprese. Bensì la storia dei suoi luoghi, un lungo
vagabondaggio attraverso le sue strade. Una guida sentimentale per chi non lo conosce ancora e
per chi lo conosce e lo ha amato, ma potrebbe scoprire qualcosa di diverso. Un modo per sentirlo
ancora vivo: se è vero che i paesaggi trattengono con sé chi non c’è più, allora Pantani è più vivo che
mai. Nel vento, tra gli alberi, nelle rocce, sul tornante di una montagna a 2000 metri d’altezza. Un
atlante completo dei luoghi simbolo dove non si può che pensare a lui. Una mappa per pirati in

14 February 2004. A phone call from the Residence Le Rose in Rimini warns that there is a body on the ground in an apartment. It is that of Marco Pantani, the most popular and discussed Italian cyclist, capable of enthuse public opinion as never before since the days of Coppi and Bartali.

When he won Giro d'Italia and above all the Tour de France, our country stopped: as for Alberto Tomba in skiing or Valentino Rossi in motorcycling, the shutters were lowered, we ran home from school in a hurry, the TV was turned on. There was a hero to be seen.

Exactly twenty years after his death, this book pays homage to his myth in the most genuine and original way: on a bike bicycle. Not a biography like many have been read, not yet another scoop-investigation on his tragic end, much less an account of his exploits.

But the history of its places, a long one wandering through its streets. A sentimental guide for those who don't know him yet and for those who know him and loved him, but might discover something different.
