January 18, 2013. Lance Armstrong admits to the cameras of Oprah Winfrey's program that he did doping and that his seven consecutive Tours de France were won by deception. Like millions of other people, Fausto is in front of the TV. However, for him, that news is not just news and from that moment his life falls apart. In the summer of 2000, when Armstrong was fighting head-to-head with Marco Pantani on the uphill roads of France and was about to win the second of his seven Tours, Fausto was diagnosed with testicular cancer, the same one that, four years earlier, had hit, and from which he had then recovered, the American champion. The only way to escape an almost certain death is to seek treatment in America. Fausto faced the disease by watching Armstrong first on TV, and then on the roads of the Tour.

Almost in a parallel race, Armstrong wins and Fausto recovers, Lance conquers France and Fausto conquers Venus, the woman with whom he has once again discovered happiness. Then, suddenly, darkness again: Venus disappears, Lance confesses. Life is a lie. And to eradicate lies from life, Fausto decides to take up a gun...

Lance Must Die is a novel about the regenerating power of illusions and the inevitability of human misery that everyone, sooner or later, has to deal with.

«Because sometimes sport isn't just sport, it's something more, a story that serves to move other stories forward. But if a non-run had given him strength and courage to start life again, that life of his was now a non-life. Lance must die, he whispered this."
